This tofu faux french toast is so delicious, rich and dramatic that it’s only fair to add a little drama to it’s respective post. And maybe a little romance – romance always makes everything better.

Last weekend, I was having some serious cravings for a carb-rich breakfast. Waffles, crepes, waffles in crepes (which is a great idea for a future blog post – duly noted) – pretty much I wanted to pile all of my favourite breakfast foods on top of one another and then smother them in syrup. You know – just another Saturday morning, right? Doesn’t everyone feel like this on the weekends? No? Oh…it must just be me then… #fatkidmoment

Girl, I don’t know, I don’t know why…

So, as I was saying, in an effort to avoid falling victim to a serious sugar coma, I decided to get creative with my breakfast and see if I could come up with an alternative recipe to my favourite breakfast food: french foast. Wanting to make something that I could share with all you lovelies, I knew my standard whole grain blend of french foast was simply not going to cut it. Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten around to continually stocking gluten-free bread in our house yet so the options for a gluten free french toast recipe were quickly dwindling.

That’s when it hit me: tofu! Just like that, tofu faux french toast was born.

I love tofu! Like pop all of it into the oven just to have bite sized tofu snacks at my convenience kind of love. So, being a staple in our house and knowing how versatile it can be in the kitchen, I began to ponder whether I could somehow make this delicious little block of goodness into something that resembled french toast. Well, lucky for you, I did. And it’s amazing!! Yup, you’re welcome!

Now, making this recipe takes a little bit of patience, but I promise you it is well worth it! Either a well oiled pan or a reliable non-stick one is absolutely mandatory – without one of these, the batter will just stick to the pan and you’ll lose a lot of the flavour, unfortunately. We have a very well-loved and well-seasoned cast iron skillet that we use to cook absolutely everything and, with a little spray coconut oil, it did the trick just fine.

Oh, some things I can’t get used to, no matter how I try…

To help speeds thing up a little bit, I would suggest pressing your tofu ahead of time. If you really want to go for full-flavour impact, you can also marinate the tofu in the refrigerator over night. Bananas are the secret ingredient in the batter of this tofu faux french toast recipe and a little rum extract really helps with carry along the rich, caramel taste that forms as the banana batter begins to caramelize in the pan. See? I told you these were gonna be rich.

We topped ours with a jazzed up maple syrup concoction, slicing up a handful of strawberries and a whole banana to add to the maple syrup. I then simmered the syrup over medium-low heat which allowed the fruit and maple syrup to get cozy with one another, producing the most amazing syrup ever! Oh, man, do I ever love me a good syrup.

Just like the more you give, the more I want and baby, that’s no lie, oh no, babe…

Are you hungry yet? You are? Oh, good, I thought I was really going to have to twist your arm with this one…nah, I knew I had you at the Barry White hook 😉

This tofu faux french toast would be perfect for a romantic breakfast with your special someone or for a weekend brunch with the family. It would be really easy to whip up a large batch of these, keeping the finished “toasts” in the oven to keep warm as the rest cook.

So throw on a little Barry White, pour yourself a mimosa or two, and crank up the romance a little as you try a batch of your own tofu faux french toast this weekend. I promise you will not be disappointed!

This gluten-free, bread free Tofu Faux French Toast places tofu square on centre stage. Caramelly, moist and oh so rich, this will quickly become a cherished recipe for romantic breakfasts or special family brunches.

Serves: 4
  • Tofu Marinade
  • 1 block firm tofu, pressed
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp rum extract
  • 1 banana
  • Batter
  • remainder of marinade
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 banana
  • Syrup
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 6 strawberries, sliced
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  1. Tofu: Press tofu until no more liquid is released. Stand brick on thin end of tofu and carefully slice tofu into large squares, approximately ½ inch thick. Once complete, slice each square on the diagonal to create triangular pieces of tofu. In large, shallow baking dish, mix coconut milk, ½ tsp nutmeg and ½ tsp rum extract. Place slices of tofu into dish and allow to rest for at least 20 minutes. Reserve marinade for the batter.
  2. Batter: Place remainder of batter into blender. Add 1 peeled banana, ¼ tsp nutmeg and ¼ tsp cinnamon. Blend for 30 seconds or until smooth. Pour batter into shallow dish.
  3. Pre-heat well oiled or non-stick pan over medium high heat. Dip each triangle of tofu into the batter mixture, ensuring that each side is well coated. Place battered tofu into pan and allow to cook for 3-4 minutes, ensuring not to move the tofu while cooking. Flip and allow other side to cook for 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat, keeping warm in oven, if necessary.
  4. Syrup: mix ¼ cup maple syrup, sliced bananas and sliced strawberries in small sauce pan. Heat, stirring often, until mixture is warm and fruit has softened.
  5. Pour syrup over prepared tofu faux french toast. Enjoy!
Prep time does not include necessary time to press tofu.

  1. This recipe was so tasty. I really enjoyed all maple syrup and fruit mixed in the the french toast. I didn’t have strawberries, but it was still really good.
